It is important to always have the right tire pressure in your vehicle. Research has shown that this has an impact on driving performance, braking, tire wear, emissions and even comfort. Having the wrong tire pressure can therefore adversely affect the quality of the ride as well as the vehicle's safety. Avoiding this is a simple matter of setting the correct tire pressure and making sure that your vehicle's tires are always up to spec. These are some of the things you can do to ensure that this is put in effect:

Always Check Cold Tire Pressure

To know the true tire pressure in your vehicle, it is encouraged that you do so in the morning before driving the vehicle, or at least two hours after driving a short distance. If you have been driving aggressively for some time, you may need to wait for the tires to cool down for longer before checking the tire pressure and getting an accurate reading.

If you take the tire pressure when it's very hot or after driving the vehicle for some time, you may get the wrong reading since the hot tires will have heated up the air within them, and this will cause the pressure to increase slightly. This is usually considered when a tire manufacturer assigns a tire pressure range to specific tires. Also check your vehicle's user manual for the specific tires you are supposed to run and which pressure they are supposed to be at to know when the pressure is truly off this range.

Using TPMS

Newer vehicles have an automated tire pressure management system. this comprises of tire pressure valve caps which have sensors which send tire pressure information to the cars central computer. This is interpreted, and the corrected cold tire pressure is displayed in the instrument binnacle or the Infotainment system. To make sure that this system is working correctly, you need to ensure the following:

  • Make sure that the tire pressure valve caps match the vehicle.
  • The tire pressure valve caps should fit tightly. Occasionally taking the time to check that they are tight is worth it since this means that they will display the correct tire pressure always.
  • When replacing the tires for your vehicle, make sure you use tires that are of the correct size according to the car owner's manual.
