In the United States, Volvos are quickly becoming one of the most popular car makers. This can be attributed to the fact that Volvo vehicles are the safest and most well made in the world. They're excellent build quality means that their functional parts rarely go wrong. From time to time, one or more of the systems in a Volvo may become dysfunctional. The air conditioning unit is one of these. If you happen to have problems with their Volvo air conditioning, you can use the tips below to try and troubleshoot the problem.
OBD2 Scanning
For many modern vehicles, this is the best way to identify any problems with car systems. It involves using an OBD 2 scanner, connecting this to the vehicle and then running a diagnostics test. If there are problems with any systems, the scan will show results of where this problem is and makes repairs much faster. It's important to note that not all Volvos for all air conditioning problems can be diagnosed using OBD 2 scanning.
If There Is Little Airflow
If the problem with the air conditioning is related to reduced air flow, you might need to check on the following to know where the problem lies:
- Make sure that the blower motor is functional. This will need to be checked and fixed by an automotive electrician.
- Clogging of the cabin air filter: if the air filter cleaning the air coming into the cabin is clogged, it could result in impeded airflow. If you have not replaced the cabin air filters and live in an area with a lot of dust or smog, it may be necessary to have this checked. Since this filter is located behind the dashboard, many components of the dashboard including the trim and radio may need to be removed to access it. Have a mechanic check this so that the risk of damage is low. This type of check is best done at a renowned Volvo dealership.
- The airways might be blocked: the airways could be blocked especially if the vehicle is left parked for a long time in an area where rodents could get into it. The presence of leaves and other organic matter can also clog the piping leading from the air conditioning unit in the engine into the dashboard vents. Have the entire system checked if the air conditioning has a weak stream or produces a strange odour when you switch it on.
When The Air Is Not Cold Enough
If the air is not cold enough, it means that it's not being cooled adequately. Problems that could lead to this include:
- When there isn't enough coolant in the system, in which case it would need to be topped up.
- When the condenser fan or radiator are not working appropriately. This could be due to blockage of the ducts or if the fan does not turn fast when you switch on the air conditioner and select the coldest temperature. Broken or misshapen fan blades can also cause these problems.
