Cruise control has been around for a long time and helps a car owner to have peace of mind when driving. The system makes long distance driving safer and less tiring, and it has also been shown to be more fuel efficient as well. Modern cruise control systems also offer many advantages in city driving, including the ability to react to emergencies much faster than you would have. To set and use cruise control correctly in a Volvo, you need to do the following:

Conventional Cruise Control

To use basic cruise control in nearly all Volvos manufactured since 2000, you only need to do the following:

  • Ensure that you are driving at a speed above 20 mph.
  • Press one of the arrow keys on the left side of your vehicle's steering wheel, or a button with the word "Cruise Control" on it. This puts it in standby mode. The cruise control icon will change colour to white from grey.
  • You can set up your desired speed by pressing the "+" or "-"button on the same keypad. The indicated speeds will increase or decrease respectively by 5 mph each time you press the button.
  • In some vehicles, you will need to accelerate to the desired speed, and then press the "Set" button on the Cruise Control Settings menu.
  • Ensure that the speed you have chosen is within the legal speed limit. More modern Volvos can read speed signs and will reduce or increase the speed depending on what the indicated speed limit is on the section of road unless you manually override this.
  • Once cruise control is set up, you can then lift your foot off the accelerator and let the car control the gas, brake, and transmission to maintain the speed without hitting other vehicles on the road.
  • Even with cruise control set, keep your hands on the steering wheel and be ready to intervene in case of any problem such as sudden braking of the vehicle ahead of you.

In addition to reading and responding to speed limit signs, some newer Volvos also have a feature that allows you to maintain a certain distance between your car and the car ahead. When cruise control is engaged, the vehicle will automatically start braking when it notices the vehicle ahead starting to slow down to maintain the distance you have set.

In these vehicles, you will need to set the following distance in addition to the cruise control. During higher speed driving on a highway, you can use longer following distances to allow for safer braking. When driving slowly in city traffic, you can choose a shorter following distance to make driving in slow moving traffic more comfortable.
